Since the 2023-2024 school year, our Library Learning Commons has organized all authentic Indigenous resources in a distinct collection. Authentic Indigenous resources include works written by Canadian and Native American authors and works of Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers written in partnership with non-Indigenous authors. Well-researched works about Indigenous peoples and issues written from non-Indigenous perspectives are included in the regular non-fiction section of the library.
All authentic Indigenous resources are organized using the Brian Deer Classification system, rather than the standard Dewey Decimal system used in western school and public libraries. Brian Deer was a Mohawk librarian who worked with Elders and Knowledge Keepers during the mid 1970s to classify resources based on Indigenous ways of knowing.
Victoria High School’s collection of authentic Indigenous resources represents one important step towards towards Truth and Reconciliation, and will help educate our Vic High community about Indigenous literature, issues, and perspectives.
